Around the Homestead- Blog

How is November bearing down on us so quickly? Winter is right around the corner and I feel like I haven’t even caught my breath from summer yet – and wow! What a summer it was for us! We sure had an amazing time finding our footing figuring our way around having a booth at Farmers Markets. We thought we’d take a quick little dive into the Mexico Farmers Market and then we decided to sign up for another vendor/craft show, then another. They we decided to check out the Fulton Farmers Market and did 2 Saturdays there as well. Then a few more craft/vendor events. Before we knew it we were signed up for quite a few events! We definately could have done many many more but we also need to make sure we have time to prep the farm for the winter and we need to take care of the animals and ourselves too. We don’t want to “burnout”. Taking care of us is important too, probably one of the most important things. The farm isn’t our only thing. Jamey works full time too. I am substitute teaching and over the summer I completed the classes I needed for my Teaching Assistant certification. I just took and passed the test a week ago! It was a huge undertaking to be working the farm, vendor shows heading into the holidays, subbing and getting my TA PLUS all my everyday responsibilities of being a wife, mom and Grammie too. I’m pretty darn proud of myself for getting it all done.

I’ve also been bust starting to make soaps for spring and summer 2026 already. We hadn’t planned to do this past summers markets and didn’t really have the stock we needed. I want next summer to be different. We will be prepared, well-stocked! Lots of yummy smelling new scents and the favorites too!

On the farm front, we sadly lost one of our original goats, Grumbles, about 2 weeks ago. We aren’t sure exactly what happened. He was fine in the morning and when I went out to do afternoon feeding, he had collapsed and was in really bad shape. We worked for hours and hours to try to save him. Unfortunately, there was just nothing more that could be done, he was too far gone. He was the sweetest goat, more like a dog than a goat really- fearless and kind, always just wanted love and to be scratched. Its still incredibly hard for me to walk into the barn. I miss him terribly.

Our girls, Dutchess, Maxie and Hazel, will be ready for breeding in about 2 weeks or so. They’ll be put in with our buck and with any luck we’ll have babies in April. In April, we’ll be putting our younger girls, Gemini and Bluey, in to be bred. If you’re interested in babies, the sooner you let us know the better!

Fall has been so very busy and I am really looking forward to the slowdown of winter. Time to rest, time to recover, time to enjoy this season of life. Jamey and I celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary next week, on November 3, and I’m looking forward to spending some quieter moments of time with him, a few slower days.
