Spring has Sprung, or at least I hope so! One never knows in Upstate NY. One day its 75 degrees and sunny and the next its 30 with flurries in the air. It’s so unpredictable here its ridiculous. I just think I can get outside and really make a dent in things and then we’re under a winter storm warning and crossing our fingers that it doesn’t snow because we pulled the snow blower off the tractor!
I feel like I always say “we’ve been busy” but wow have we ever been!! My daughter is working full time so I’m watching my grandkids full time while she works. We went to our first livestock auction and came home with 4 pretty new chickens last weekend and on our way home looked at each other and said “where are we going to put them?’ because they really should be quarantined for a few days before mixing with our current flock. Oops haha. Nothing like jumping in feet first, huh? Well we got that situated and the next day I went with my grandson to Tractor Supply and came home with 12 baby chicks. The plan had been 6 but chicken math happened and well….yeah, I had some explaining to do.
We ended up doing quite a bit of rearranging. Our small hay barn became the new chicken coop, and the old chicken coop will become the new hay storage barn once I get a non-rainy day to clean it out. The benefit of this is we almost tripled the indoor space for our chickens and we constructed a new outdoor run that is at least 4 times the size they had before. I wish we could just let them free-range but we have too many predators who would love to have a chicken snack. Just 2 days ago we had fox 25 feet from the back door of our house.
We also added to our goat herd a little over a month ago. We added the most handsome young buck named Ringo. He is breeding with Maxie and Ringo and with luck, we’ll have some babies in Sept/Oct this fall. He is hard at work trying to make that happen *grin*
Garden prep is well under way and seedlings are being started indoors. I’m looking forward to getting my hands dirty in the garden. Soon, very soon!!
Finally,
We are beyond happy to announce that we are officially partners with Homegrown by Heroes and have the distinction of being able to place their logo on all products produced here on our farm! Being a Veteran owned farm gives us this unique opportunity because Homegrown by Heroes is the official Farmer Veteran branding program of America.
We are very excited, and proud, to have this partnership and distinction. Many thanks to my husband for his service to our country.
