Salt Dough Ornaments
Making ornaments for your tree is a rite of passage for every child I think. Mixing up salt dough, cutting it out, waiting forever for them to dry out then painting them is so much fun. Kids are always so proud to show off their work, give a homemade gift. These ornaments, if made and dried properly, can last years and years.
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup table salt
1 1/2 cup water
combine all ingredients together until you get a smooth dough. If it is too sticky, add flour 1 teaspoon at a time. If its too dry, add water 1 teaspoon at a time. The dough should be smooth, easy to roll out and work with.
Roll the dough out on a floured surface. Cut out desired shapes with cookie cutters. Remove excess dough and repeat. Transfer shapes to a cookie sheet. If you are making ornaments, be sure to make a hole to hang the ornament from later. You can use a straw to make the hole opening. Once finished, place shapes on the cookies sheets into a 200 degree oven for 2 hours. Remove and let cool completely.
Paint with acrylic paint if desired. Once paint is dry you can seal with modge podge.
Below are some ornaments we made with our granddaughter last year
